UTILIZING?powerful groundstrokes and his favourite backarm slice, No. 3 seed Duncan Evanson defeated his doubles partner, No.1 seed Seanon Williams, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, yesterday at the Ocean View Courts to advance to tomorrow’s men’s open final of the BNB Tournament.
In a game lasting over two hours, the two Davis Cup hopefuls provided plenty of action and drama, with Williams smashing a racquet in frustration in the second set and then retiring while serving at 2-3 in the decider.
Evanson will meet Russell Moseley in what is expected to be a thrilling final.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Melena Lopez played a superb game to take the Girls’ 16-and-Under title with a 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 victory over Julia Herlogsson, who is ranked No. 8 in Sweden. After dropping the second set, Lopez raised her game and forced the match into a tiebreaker which she dominated (7-3).
Tiebreakers also featured in the Boys’ 14-and-Under division where Ajani King lost to Matthew Estwick 7-6, 6-7, 3-6, with the first two set going to tiebreakers.
Estwick, who only started playing serious tennis last year, benefited from his aggressive approach. He will meet Andrew Symmonds in tomorrow’s final.
King suffered from his earlier exchanges as cramps forced him to bow out of the Boys’ 16-and-Under semis, losing to Simon Lewis 6-1, 3-6, 4-6. Lewis will play Brandon Lee tomorrow in the final. (KB)
