Expert calls for eye bank

WITH A GROWING DEMAND for corneal transplants in Barbados, a local ophthalmologist believes the time has come for systems to be put in place to meet the need.
Consultant ophthalmologist with the Warrens Eye Care Clinic, Dr Nigel Barker, said that since last year he has been performing on average two such operations per week at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and could do more.
“The problem is that there is no eye bank and we have to source the tissue from overseas.  As we move along, there will be a need . . . .
“We will have to develop transplant and donor services here, but I think that there are regulations out there that will have to be moved forward,” he said.
