HC, Lodge A lead in chess

Harrison College?and Lodge School “A”?have been in dominant form after two rounds of the United Insurance Under-13 Chess championship.
The Harrisonions are leading on 20 points followed closely by perennial champions Lodge “A” on 19.
The team tournament, being staged at Harrison College on Saturday mornings, is played over five boards with two points for a win, one for a draw and zero points for a loss.
In the first round, Harrison College crushed Lodge “C” 10-0 with victories by Luke Cardoza, Ghansham Kumar, Dario Marshall, Gabriella Cumberbatch and Riyad Juman.
It was no different in the second round where the same team demolished a hapless Coleridge and Parry by a similar score.
Lodge “A”, led by national Under-16 champion Yutien Poon, dispatched Lodge “B” 9-1, with victories by Poon, Jeran Coppin, Shaquan Graham and Matthew Worrell.
However, the experienced Terrel Davis, on Board 5, stumbled against Royston Hoyte, allowing a draw and enabling Lodge “B” to escape the whitewash.
In round two, Lodge “A” blanked their Lodge “C” counterparts 10-0.
In the Under-15 Division, Harrison College also have a slight lead over the formidable Lodge “A”.
In round two, Harrison College defeated former co-leaders Combermere 8-2, courtesy victories from Rohansonn Waithe, Chad Grosvenor, Rhaheem Layne and Asha Chadderton.
However, Emar Edwards scored a massive upset over national junior player Shea Cardoza. Edwards shocked Cardoza in the opening and recorded a swift and memorable victory.
The Lodge “A” team got back in the thick of things, crushing Queen’s College “B” 10-0. The team of twins Jerome and Jakeel Harewood, Christopher Grant, Mikhal Mascoll and Shaquan Jones all scored impressive wins.
Queen’s College “A” did not fare well either, as Lodge “B” handed them a 6-4 defeat. Triumphing for Lodge “B” were O’Shara Mason, Darnell Rowe and Shewyn Ellis, while Brandon Boras and Niccolo Walrond won for Queen’s College “A”.
In another riveting match Coleridge and Parry battled to a hard-fought draw with Lodge “C”. (PR/EZS)
