Centenarian Carolotta Elfreda Griffith joined with her family, friends and well-wishers in giving praise to God for allowing her to reach the milestone of her 100th birthday.
When Acting Governor General Elliott Belgrave visited Griffith yesterday at her Six Men’s, St Peter home, she could be heard heartily singing Tis So Sweet To Trust In Jesus.
Griffith was described by her only child, Keith Scantlebury, as a God-fearing person who still attends Six Men’s Pentecostal Church.
Scantlebury, who takes care of his mother with the help of his wife Louise, said she was kind but strict and would never allow him to have his own way. He added that she worked as a maid and also cultivated a piece of land.
Louise described her mother-in-law as still strong, very coherent and having an excellent memory.
Griffith was said to have always had a love for politics and cricket, with Brian Lara and Sir Garfield Sobers being her favourite cricketers. Sir Grantley Adams and his son Tom Adams are two politicians she always liked and supported.
“You cannot say nothing against them,” Scantlebury said.
He recalled that she told them a few weeks ago to get her identification card because she thought elections were being called.
Apart from diabetes, Griffith has no other major ailments associated with old age. She is still a very good eater and loves to have a banana every morning with breakfast.
If she doesn’t get it, she gets very upset.
