The Barbados Defence Force (BDF) had their cake and ate it too but defending kings Weymouth Wales weren’t greedy enough, taking just one slice.
Whereas a hat-trick by substitute Chai Lloyd and a double strike by Kyle Gibson resulted in BDF blanking Pinelands 5-0, Wales were indebted to Jabar “Buggy” Walters for his 12th-minute goal from a 30-yard shot for their disappointing 1-0 victory over Division Two team Belfield in two second-round KFC Knockout Cup football matches at the National Stadium on Sunday night.
Whether it was because of the staging of Reggae On The Beach or other reasons, Pinelands, missing regular starters like Lionel Paul, Jarvis Forde, Omar Primus and Romayne Primus, were at sea against the army’s football recruits.
New coach Ivan “Speed” Forde had to field a number of Division Two players and after the BDF boys were kept at bay for 37 minutes, the floodgates opened.
The speedy Gibson collected the ball on the right flank, sprinted into the penalty area and beat stand-in goalkeeper Ryan Hope at his near post.
Six minutes later, Mario Harte sped past Pinelands’ right back and squared across the goalmouth for Gibson to tap in his second goal with his left foot. Then came the Lloyd show in the last 20 minutes of the match.
The 19-year-old Lloyd was on the pitch for just two minutes after coming on for Kadeem Atkins when he was lucky not to be flagged for offside as he ran onto a wayward shot by Gibson and easily beat Hope.
In the 85th minute, Lloyd capitalized on a defensive error to score again before completing his hat-trick, a minute from time.
In the second match, Wales, without their inspirational coach Eric Alleyne, who is overseas, seemed too hasty to score against their junior opponents, with Dwayne Stanford, Kemar Headley, Zaaehaeus Polius and Corey McCollin squandering opportunities.
To their credit, Belfield, with Sadiz Hill and Trevor Ifill, two Police cricketers, marshalling the defence, along with Christopher Forde, only conceded Walters’ solitary goal.
They even had a golden chance to get the equalizer when Shawn Clarke’s weak backheader to Wales’ goalkeeper Greg Jones was intercepted by Renel Smith but his left-foot shot was deflected by Jones for a corner.
In another game at Valery, KDJ Auto Parts Gatorade Dayrells Road survived a scare before edging Indar Weir Clarke’s Hill 3-2 in extra time.
Dayrells Road led after 23 minutes when John Stoute scored but Clarke’s Hill stormed back to lead 2-1 after Andre Blades (27th) equalized and Ramon Beckles scored in the 33rd minute.
But Dayrells Road were awarded a controversial 36th-minute penalty which Brian Bynoe converted after goalkeeper Kodi Skeete was adjudged as having fouled Quincy Atherley.
Atherley then headed home the winner, five minutes into the first period of extra time, from a free kick by Bynoe.
