Aaron Barker was the only Looper to win on the table but his effort was enough to take Fast Loopers past Mount Gay Bayswater in Premier League table tennis at the Table Tennis Centre, Nursery Drive, Saturday night.
With only two players appearing for Bayswater, Barker’s first set win over Paco Moss virtually guaranteed his side the full two points from the contest.
Denis France was a no-show for Bayswater leaving Kevin Farley to play two singles and Moss one. France’s name appeared on the score sheet in the doubles alongside Moss but Trevor Farley and Rashad King won that match-up for Fast Loopers without lifting their rackets.
France also caused his side to lose the crucial fifth set that was taken by Trevor Farley, again without even leaving the bench.
Barker won his opening duel with Moss 11-6, 9-11, 11-5, 11-9. Kevin Farley’s wins for Bayswater came over King, 11-7, 11-9, 11-8 and Barker 11-8, 11-6, 8-11, 11-4.
The triumph for Fast Loopers narrowed the gap at the top of the standings.
Fast Loopers moved to six points, just one behind Bayswater, on seven.
It was the first defeat for Bayswater this season.
Scouters stayed on even terms with Loopers after beating Barbados Light & Power (BL&P) 3-2. It means that BL&P now occupy the cellar position on five points in the four-team tournament which any of the participants can still win.
The success of Scouters was inspired primarily by their national player Mark Dowell who had an impressive outing at the World Team Championships in Dortmund, Germany, recently.
On Saturday, he beat Ann Reid 11-9, 11-5, 11-8 and then combined with Bryan Matthews to topple Reid and Shane Norville 11-6, 11-7, 11-6.
Abbie “Playboy” Clarke pulled two sets back for BL&P by beating Junior Evelyn 3-2 and Matthews 3-0, but Evelyn won the fifth-set decider against Norville 12-10, 11-5, 7-11, 11-3 to secure the victory for Scouters. (PH)
