Alleyne win Alumni sports

Not only did the Alleyne School Alumni Association conceptualize the first ever Barbados Inter-Alumni Association Athletic Championships, they won them too.
With a whooping 253 points, Alleyne School emerged inaugural winners of the Championships, edging Coleridge and Parry, who finished on 246 points, into second place while St Leonard’s Boys’/Girls’ ended in third with 188 points when the meet ended at the National Stadium on Saturday.
And by all accounts, Alleyne School Alumni Association president Takaidza Chafuta is pleased with the response the event has received from both athletes and spectators alike.
Revealing that the meet had attracted 180 ahletes, he said that was a very encouraging sign for a first-time event.
“I am very encouraged by the interest which we have received, especially because this is the first time that anything like this has ever been held.
“We are hoping to make this an annual event and we hope to improve and get bigger and better. The athletes have been great and the spectators have been very supportive.”
Chafuta said although the Championships had been planned as a fun event, some of the athletes had obviously been training leading up the games as there had been some good performances on the track.
Sharon Larrier, representing Christ Church Foundation School, did the double in the 20-29 Women’s 100 and 200 metres, clocking 12.28 and 25.16, respectively, while Troy Hunte, of Garrison Secondary, jumped 6.28 metres in the Men’s 30-39 long jump.
Among those participating in the meet were coach of the national athletics team, Alwyn Babb, and veterans Wendy Barrow-Smith and Kathy Harper-Hall. (RB)
