The Royal Barbados Police Force is stepping up its fight against jewellery theft.
Its latest move resulted in the arrest of five men who were also charged with drug and firearm possession.
Police reported that an operation was carried out in Bridgetown on Saturday by various branches of the force, with several warrants being executed.
Three stores, two on Roebuck Street and one on Broad Street, were targeted and as a result arrests were made.
Trevor Dacosta Hurdle, 31, of Uncle’s Place, Roebuck Street, St Michael, and Shamar Dacosta Weir, 18, of Bay Gardens, Bayville, St Michael, were arrested and jointly charged with possession of a .25 firearm and illegal possession of a quantity of ammunition.
Zico Ronald Dupree, 26, of Beckles Hill, St Michael, was charged with having a small quantity of cannabis, while Carlton Blagrove, 34, of Harts Avenue, Bayville, St Michael, was charged with possession of 50 grams of cannabis, trafficking and possession with intent to supply.
Kebarry Bryan, 17, of Forde’s Road, Christ Church, was arrested and charged with the theft of a gold chain.
Police public relations officer Inspector David Welch said the operation was conducted in response to the increase in cases of theft, especially of gold.
