BEING ABLE to read and write should not be accepted as having attained the standard of literacy, says Michael Carrington, Speaker of the House.
Carrington, who is also Member of Parliament for St Michael West, was speaking yesterday at the opening ceremony of the Hindsbury Primary School Literacy Week activities under the theme Champions Read; Readers Lead.
Carrington told the students: “Your job is to do the very best you can do so that you are able to communicate at the highest level.”
He said earlier thought suggested that literacy was the ability to read and write, but it had been broadened to include critical thinking and communication skills.
Therefore, said the MP, it was the responsibility of children to make the best of opportunities provided by Government, teachers and parents.
