THE?Ministry of Health will shut down “without delay” any private nursing home that does not comply with the operating standards set out by the Ministry.
Minister of Health Donville Inniss made this clear yesterday during a launch of a handbook setting out the criteria for the licensing of private hospitals, nursing homes, senior citizens’ homes and maternity homes in Barbados.
The event took place in the conference room of the Ministry of Health and was attended by several health officials including Chief Medical Officer, Dr Joy St John, Permanent Secretary Ronald Fitt, and Senior Medical Health Officer (CNCD), Dr Kenneth George.
While he acknowledged that the majority of institutions that cared for the elderly did comply with the regulations, Inniss said there were still “one or two who see it as a way to make a quick dollar and not focus on patient care”.
