Barbadians HAVE been forced to dig into their savings to the tune of more than $1 billion for the last three years, former Prime Minister Owen Arthur claimed last night.
And Arthur, the Leader of the Opposition, wants Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler to come up with solutions to save Barbados’ shrinking economy, instead of picking on him in Parliament.
“It [the economy] is a mess right now, but we will fix it. The Barbados Labour Party sees it as a duty to remove Barbadians from the grips of this current Government,” Arthur told a packed meeting of the five BLP Christ Church constituency branches at the Christ Church Foundation School.
Arthur revealed that deposits by Barbadians in local banks which stood at $9.333 billion in 2008 had now shrunk to $8.222 billion in 2011.
