THE BARBADOS BRANCH of the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) has presented an award to former Governor General and patron of the society, Sir Clifford Husbands.
During a reception hosted at the official residence of British High Commissioner Paul Brummell last Saturday, new patron Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave presented his predecessor Sir Clifford with a fountain pen and a collage of pictures from the last awards function at which he (Sir Clifford) officiated.
Chairman of the society, Sandra Seale, paid tribute to Sir Clifford’s work and noted his “keen interest in promoting the society to young people, often hosting them at Government House for RCS functions.
Responding, Sir Clifford said the Royal Commonwealth Society had once been described “not as an essential organization but one of the world’s most popular clubs”. He added the hallmark of the Barbados branch was “charitable work voluntarily undertaken, quietly executed without ostentation”.
Speaking about the work of the society, Seale spoke of Sir Clifford’s interest in agriculture and music, and she suggested these two areas of endeavour could be considered as the society explored ideas related to establishing a challenge shield to be competed for by young people.
“With such a project, we can break new ground and initiate inroads into spheres where our young people meet and relate, and where the Commonwealth Society can have wholesome influence and provide significant modelling and mentorship from within its own ranks,” Seale said. (GC)
