PEOPLE FROM the constituency of St Michael South-East gathered on Sunday to take part in a carnival staged to signify the love and togetherness of the communities.
Co-organizer Deborah Brooks, who is known for holding beauty pageants in The Pine area, said organizers wanted to show Barbados the people in St Michael South-East were putting aside violence and embracing one another.
“The Pine had a lot of war in it in the past but there is peace now. We want to let people know The Pine is not that bad; it is a very loving place,” she said.
Brooks praised the men of the community for helping her to pull together everything in a short time, but lamented they continued to be ignored by corporate Barbados.
“We are trying to get sponsors but we are not getting that support from the businesses in the neighbourhood, so the men got together and put on this show,” she said.
Co-organizer Horace “Bassie” Alleyne said the carnival would be held again next year and promised they would have sponsorship then.
“The Pine never had a carnival yet and this was more of a last-minute thing, but we will have corporate support next year,” he said.
The revellers, wearing shirts with various positive messages on the front and St Michael South-East on the back, started near the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic and travelled past Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Ilaro Court, Collymore Rock, and ended in Parkinson Field. (CA)
