The Barbados Nurses’ Association (BNA) paid tribute yesterday to the late Eunice Mary Gibson, founder of the association in 1936, during a wreath-laying ceremony at Westbury Cemetery.
Blondelle Mullin, president of the association, in praising the founder’s contribution to nursing and the welfare of nurses, said: “Miss Gibson established and maintained the Nursing Employment Bureau, initiated the district nursing service in 1937, was supervisor for many years and was an active member in the BNA for 37 years. We remember her dedication and invaluable contribution to the nursing fraternity in Barbados.”
Gibson was also one of the first women to be elected as an alderwoman of the Bridgetown City Council in 1959 and also pushed for the local Nurses’ Association to be accepted by the international body as a member in 1957.
Prayers were offered by former male nurse Reverend Colton Bennett, who also hailed Gibson’s outstanding contribution to the profession. She was born on February 14, 1895, and died on December 5, 1974.
The event was attended by Gibson’s relatives, nurses and friends.
