Taking on debt may not be such a bad idea, even in these difficult economic times, says career banker and wealth management consultant Patrick Tannis. In fact, he says, managing debt could actually be a vehicle to financial prosperity.
“At this time debt is not a bad word; it is not a bad thing. Debt has its purpose,” Tannis told BARBADOS BUSINESS AUTHORITY.
“But as you grow, there are avenues to also get out of debt and to use it as a slingshot to prosperity.”
These and other ideas will be explored by international speakers, including a top official at American multinational investment-banking firm Goldman Sachs, who will advise Barbadians later this year on how to become financially free in these difficult economic times.
It will happen at the second Financially Free seminar on September 28, at Hilton Barbados. “This seminar releases people to their purpose in life which, in turn, brings them to a position of financial freedom,” said Tannis, one of the key organizers.
He is among seven speakers slated for the one-day event.
The others are Wendell Dave Dowrich, vice-president of risk and capital markets in the Financial Institutions Group at Goldman Sachs; Commercial Bank president Adam Robertson, who is also a restaurant operator, real estate developer and property manager; Barbados Stock Exchange chief executive officer and general manager Marlon Yarde; distinguished attorney Dr Trevor Carmichael, QC; local attorney and Crane Chambers principal Andrea Mullin Henry; and Lincoln Memorial University men’s basketball head coach Josh Schertz.
Topics include Debt And Estate Planning, Financial Instruments Of Barbados – Put Them To Use, The Purpose Of Money And The Spirit Of Giving, Lessons From America, How To Win With Faith, Set Your Goals And Achieve Them, and The Freedom Of Wealth.
Tannis said a special invitation had been extended to schoolchildren to give them the right start on the financial track. (DP)
