Football-crazy fans in Barbados will have several options this weekend.
In addition to two major out-of-season tournaments – the LIME Pelican Challenge and the David Thompson Football Classic – they can watch Barbados Beach International Soccer Festival tomorrow and Sunday at Browne’s Beach, Bay Street.
Dwayne Bishop, co-ordinator of the festival, said yesterday the intention was to fuse the Barbadian love for football with the island’s strong beach culture.
Flanked by Adriano De Lima, who has represented the United States beach soccer team for the past two years; Brazilian beach player Leo Cadas, Barbados Football Association (BFA) general secretary David Hinds and Winston Carter of the Barbados Tourism Authority, Bishop told the media this weekend’s action should pique the interest of local fans.
The six-team tourney will involve two overseas teams – United States and Brazil, and local sides Tridents, MQ and two squads from the Barbados Soccer Academy.
The action will start at 6 p.m. both days.
There are plans to hold the festival annually to help the BFA fulfil a mandate of pushing beach football in Barbados. (KB)
