Bajan set to get badge

One?of?Barbados’ top volleyball officials, Sherry Yearwood, is set to gain the title of international referee of the world body FIVB.
The pint-sized former student of the now defunct Roebuck Secondary and a long-serving member of Deacons Club gained the necessary qualifications during the recent 2014 Men’s Volleyball World Championship Group E qualifier for the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA), which was held in Grand Cayman.
“I needed three international FIVB games to qualify for my badge after completing my international candidate course in the Dominican Republic in 2009,” said Yearwood.
“Unfortunately, while I officiated in four matches, including holding the first referee’s post in two of those games in the Cayman, it seemed as if my qualification would have been put on hold since no one from the NORCECA Referees Commission attended the qualifier,” stated Yearwood.
However, Yearwood, who works as an accounts clerk at the Barbados Port Inc., indicated that the president of CAZOVA, the Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association, Mushtaque Mohammed, assured her that he would be following through on getting the signatures in order for her to receive her international badge.
Previously, the highest officiating title by a Barbadian was that of international candidate, which was held by Andy Thornhill. Now retired, Thornhill also played for Deacons. (KB)
