One?of Barbados’ best known drug treatment centres is now virtually on its knees, with directors appealing to the public for more than $90 000 in financial assistance to get its residency programme for young offenders back up and running again.
In a Press release Wednesday, the board of directors of Teen Challenge Barbados announced its decision to immediately suspend the “on-residence aspect” of the drug rehabilitation programme, which has been operating for the past 15 years and has counselled more than 600 men and their families who have fallen to the scourge of illegal drugs and alcohol abuse.
Chairman Andy Downes said the main dormitory building at Mapps, St Philip was “badly deteriorated” with termite-eaten floors and structural cracks in the walls.
“It is therefore partly for this reason that we have decided to suspend the on-residence programme to allow our staff to focus on fund-raising efforts,” Downes explained.
