After five years of painstaking work, the SV Ruth, described as the largest sailing vessel to be launched in Barbados in close to a century, is scheduled to set sail early in the new year.
For those unfamiliar with the name, it is the boat which has become a fixture along Browne’s Beach on Bay Street, St Michael, behind the old fish market.
“It has been an enormous amount of work designing and building a vessel,” project manager of the Blue Star Navigation Company, Ian Dash, told the SUNDAY SUN yesterday.
“I had the concept for several years but the work began in earnest from 2007 and proceeded apace as investment funds became available,” he said.
The SV Ruth is a traditional Lunenburg schooner-rigged tall ship. At 100 feet on deck (length) and 120 feet high, it will be the largest sailing vessel to be launched in Barbados in close to a century, according to a news release from the builders.
