Newly-installed Opposition Leader Mia Mottley and former leader Owen Arthur presented a united picture as they walked side by side yesterday, leading other Barbados Labour Party MPs and Senators taking the oath of office before Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave at Government House.
The 10:30 a.m. swearing-in ceremony in the imposing drawing room of the 300-year-old official residence of Barbados’ Governors and Governors General, saw the 14 Opposition MPs and two Senators pledging allegiance. They were led by Mottley wearing a well-tailored brown suit, as she recited the oath before the Governor General, while her brother Warren looked on from among the guests.
As they awaited Sir Elliott’s arrival, Mottley and Arthur stood, slightly apart from the rest of the group, engaged in continuous conversation.
MPs and Senators were all accompanied by members of their families. Dwight Sutherland, the new-elected member of parliament for St George South was accompanied by his parents Marelda and Luther Sutherland; Edmund Hinkson by his wife Beverly and mother Pam Hinkson while Santia Bradshaw was with her father DeLisle Bradshaw, a former MP and fiancé Tony Hoyos.
