The Barbados Water Polo Club hosted a beach exhibition match recently at the popular Pebbles Beach to give locals a look at the sport.
Organized by a senior member of the club, Stanley Brooker, the event was open for the public to participate and it also gave them an opportunity to become familiar with some of the club’s players.
As the goals were set, the two teams – differentiated by the colour of the game caps – took to the water for a brief warm-up and then the action got underway.
Some spectators watched from the shore, while others who were more adventurous used paddleboards, swam out to nearby anchored boats and perched on any other flotation device available.
The blue team got off to a strong start with an early three-goal lead before the white team responded with a long-range bomb that stretched the back of the net.
Despite stellar goalkeeping on both ends, there were a notably high number of shot attempts per offensive possession by both teams, much to the enjoyment of the spectators.
As the game went on, the teams invited any interested spectators to join in and welcomed the brave few that tried with guidance and encouragement during each of their turns.
The blue team won by two goals, but a fun time was had by club members and spectators alike.
The Darren Eastmond Invitational tournament, scheduled for March 29 to 31 at the Aquatic Centre and April 1 at Pebbles Beach, and a series of open clinics, the date and venue of which are to be announced, will be hosted by the club to provide the public with an opportunity to learn the sport. (PR)
