Double honours for Team Defenders

It was?double delight for Defenders when the Barbados Pool Development Organization’s new season got underway at the Mount Gay’s Visitors Lounge, next to the Spring Garden Highway, on March 10.
Following the parade of the nine registered clubs and the opening ceremony, Defenders won the prize for the best turned out team while Q Bandits were voted best team on parade.
Defenders then turned the eagerly-awaited champion of champions match into a no-contest by demolishing arch-rivals Eastern 6-0.
In the opening games, national team player Shane Sealy and Gregory “Lara” Phillips of Defenders were in fine form as they dismissed Randy Brathwaite and Lionel Brathwaite of Eastern 3-0 and  3-1, respectively.
Doubles partners Ronald Browne and Damien Batson then defeated Ryan Sobers and Ivan Holder 3-0 while Stephen Cox and Keisha Calderon won over Desmond Simpson and Stacey Kirton 3-1 and 3-0 respectively.
Eastern decided to bring in their sub with national team captain Stephen Barrow against Victor Carter of Defenders. However, Carter swept aside Barrow in three straight games to seal the match.
Meanwhile, this year’s Mount Gay Silver 8-Ball League Tournament has attracted the nine registered clubs in Casablanca Stars, Crazy 8s, Defenders, Eastern, Kangaroos, Q Bandits, Police, Saints and Technicians. (EZS)
