Controversy mars Div. 1 opener

It was a case of déjà vu when controversy over officiating calls almost scuttled a clash between COW Rangers and Spooners Hill in the opening Division 1 clash Monday night at the Netball Stadium.
Defending champs Rangers took the game 46-36, after it was blown off by umpire Tony Brathwaite with Rangers leading 33-26 with 31 seconds left in the third quarter.
Following an intervention by the Barbados Association of Netball Umpires (BANU), whose members were meeting close to the court, the game was restarted after a heated 15 minutes of confusion.
It was in May 2006 that Spooners Hill were banned for two matches and coach Cameron Greenidge was given a five-year ban after he had called his players off of the court during a game against Rangers. The ban against Greenidge was lifted early in February 2010.
