A culture of preparedness for natural and man-made disasters must be developed in Barbados and it must start with the young people.
That is according to Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite who was speaking yesterday at the Coastal Hazards Awareness Mascot Competition Prize-Giving Ceremony at the Crane Hotel, St Philip.
Brathwaite, who is also Minister of Home Affairs, said young people should understand that the best defence Barbados had against all types of hazards, natural and man-made disasters was the ability to be prepared.
He said that whilst his ministry took its mandate to prepare for the unexpected event seriously, Barbadians should do the same.
“The reality is that whilst we are alive and once we are on this earth and whilst we are on this rock, we must be prepared for all eventualities. In that regard, therefore, we believe that onus is on us to ensure that there is continuity and that is why we have targeted our young people so that then we would develop a culture of preparedness.”
The competition was hosted by the Technical Standing Costal Committee on Coastal Hazards in conjunction with the Barbados Government Information Service and ran from January 23 to February 28.?(AH)
