MORE IS BEING DONE to encourage Barbadians to be proactive about hurricane preparedness as well as assist them in the event of an emergency.
And to help them better appreciate these things, the Department of Emergency Management (DEM) will roll out a series of messages this month via the media.
DEM deputy director Kerry Hinds said June has been designated Hurricane Preparedness Month and shortly Barbadians “will see and feel the presence of the department and its messages throughout the wider community”.
Hinds said over the years Barbadians would have been sensitized through similar outreach programmes that emphasized, among other things, safer building and the use of building materials such as hurricane straps to safeguard and reinforce structures; individual householders appropriately disposing of garbage and cleaning their drains and surroundings to safeguard against debris affecting them or their neighbours.
