Trading punches

Government and the Opposition were on another collision course yesterday as both sides traded criticisms on a day of political intrigue.
In the morning, Minister of International Business Donville Inniss accused Leader of the Opposition Mia Mottley of trying to destroy Barbados’ economy and scare off international investors. He was responding to Mottley’s unspecified threat against the Government if it did not show how it would rescue the Barbados economy by the end of yesterday.
“I am satisfied beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Barbados Labour Party is on a mission to destroy this economy and society. They are on a mission to speak ill of Barbados every step of the way, including abroad,” said Inniss, who called on Mottley to bring solutions to the table.
In turn, Mottley was critical of Prime Minister Freundel Stuart’s statement that Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has been functioning like a “kangaroo court” and Government intends to repeal legislation governing this watchdog body.
Government objects to the manner in which the PAC, which Mottley chairs, conducts its business, particularly by allowing the media to attend hearings and report on witnesses and their evidence, and permitting live Internet streaming of proceedings. (SP/AB)
