Hundreds of Barbadians cheered wildly as Bridgetown was lit up in the annual Independence Lighting Ceremony yesterday evening.
Sponsors Sagicor Life Inc.’s Sandra Kellman threw the switch at 6:50 p.m. in Independence Square during a programme that saw performances by the Barbados Landship, Springer Memorial School Choir, the New Dimension Eagles drama group and others.
Delivering the main address, Minister of Culture Stephen Lashley urged Barbadians to reflect on the country’s history and nationhood, to see what they could do to help the fight against ills and otherwise improve the society.
Describing Independence as “a way of life” and “a state of mind”, he said Barbadians should not “sit idly by” and complain about what they saw as problems. (TY)
