THE AFRICAN VILLAGE set up at Eagle Hall Primary School was the main attraction for students as they celebrated African Awareness Day on Monday.
The activities were held under the theme Celebrating Our African Heritage and Mabalozi for Eagle Hall Primary, Michelle Cave, said for the past two weeks the children learnt about Africa and its connection to Barbados.
Mabalozi is the ambassador from Africa to the Caribbean, placed specifically in schools through a programme by the Commission for Pan African Affairs.
Cave said special focus was on the regions in Africa where the children’s ancestors came from, such as Guinea, Gambia, Senegal, Ghana and Togo. In addition, they learnt about the culture, languages, food, games and people.
As the two weeks of activities concluded, the students donned their African attire, listened to Anansi stories from Africa, tasted African foods, sang folk songs, and danced African style. They were also introduced to the African games of warri, stick licking and the balafon.
