With seven of nine regattas gone, the race for the right to be called national sailing champions will heat up over the next six weeks when the J24 Club of Barbados host the final two regattas of the season.
Following the 2014 First Citizens Investment Services Regatta, contested off Holetown last weekend, defending national champions Williams Industries HawkEye have kept themselves in range of maintaining the J24 championship, in what should be a keen tussle with other front-runners Banks Esperanza and Republic Bank Impulse.
The final two regattas will be the Lucky Horseshoe event in late June and the usually competitive Harris Paints Regatta in early July.
Last weekend, HawkEye, ScotiaBank Bunga Bunga and Bad Attitude of St Lucia created the biggest ripples on the waves on the West Coast as they were the top finishers in the First Citizens Investments Regatta.
HawkEye won the two-day event with 18 points, while Bunga Bunga were second on 19 points and Bad Attitude third with 27 points.
“It was a very well organised and competitive event and you had to be consistent. We have been able to pick up the pace in our last two regattas and we are hoping to get even better in the remaining events of the season,” said HawkEye skipper Robert Povey.
Following the ocean-racing last weekend, sailors and sponsors gathered for an awards ceremony at the Drift Lounge where Elizabeth Morgan, country manager of First Citizens Investment Services, and J24 Club president Greg Webster, thanked participants and organisers for contributing to another successful regatta.
