Proposal to decentralise ambulances

The EMERGENCY Ambulance Service has made proposals to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s administration for the decentralisation of ambulances to better meet the needs of the public and the response time of ambulance personnel.

Areas which have been proposed as decentralisation points are Six Roads, St Philip, and the Grantley Adams International Airport, Christ Church.

An ambulance service was previously provided from Arch Hall Fire station but with ongoing refurbishment taking place there, this service will not be in place again until next year.

Medical consultant for the Emergency Ambulance Services, Dr David Byer said operating solely from its Jemmotts Lane, St Michael location, reaching some individuals in need of an ambulance was at times very challenging.

“For instance, to go from here to some parts of St Lucy, such as North Point, can take 40 minutes to get there and 40 minutes back, even with sirens on. This is a whole hour and 20 minutes before we can get the patient to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH).”
