Beach plea

AFTER A WEEK of patrolling normally tranquil beaches that were being pounded by huge swells, lifeguards are again calling for the power to order bathers out of the water.

A number of them said that while most people heeded the red flags placed on the beach to warn them against venturing into the water, others ignored the warning on too many occasions and then had to be rescued.

One veteran lifeguard recalled that the unsuccessful, campaign that would give them the power to truly manage bathers dated back to the 1990s.
