So Jacob went near to Isaac his father who felt him and said “the voice is Jacob’s voice but the hands are the hands of Esau.” And he did not recognise him because his were hairy like his brother Esau’s hands, so he blessed him. He said “are you really my son Esau? – Genesis 27: 22-24
IS THIS THE MONTH or season of industrial action? At the moment it would seem so.
Earlier in the month it was the waste haulers group, the drivers of the Transport Board and then last Saturday, the secondary schools pulled stumps on the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA).
It was a sad day in the history of cricket in Barbados. The schoolboys’ boycott of the games came as a surprise and shock to this writer.
The decision to boycott was wrong especially since we are having so many problems with our young people.
We have to be very careful about the kind of message that was sent.
We must remember that they are young minds and we, the adults, must be aware about the message.
Challenges
Are we telling them that that was the way to go? I am sure that those young men will have many challenges to face from time to time. How are they going to handle them in life and above all in a world which is not an easy one to live in?
We must teach them to use something called reason.I feel very strongly that the games should have been played and it could have been done under protest.
I am sure that the game of cricket is bigger than those who were responsible for the abandonment of those games. Some will argue that it was a principle but the game is bigger than principle.
Tell me what will happen if those same students refused to attend classes? What will happen to them? Sometimes we do things that will come back to haunt us. Only time will tell what the boycott will cause.
