HEAD OF A local gay body is questioning why all the fuss is being created over the recent US supreme court decision to allow same-sex marriages.
Donnya Piggott, president and founder of Barbados Gays, Lesbians and All-Sexuals Against Discrimination (B-GLAD) said that there had been other pressing matters involving the abuse of children with hardly any discussion.
“Two weeks after the ruling, religious, social commentators and politicians are still coming out of the woodwork to denounce it as if the ruling was passed in Barbados. Meanwhile, two children died unnatural deaths under suspicious circumstances, and the Child Care Board took 13 children who were facing serious cases of abuse in their homes. It makes local news and there is not a whisper from any one of these caretakers of the social and moral fabric of Barbados,” she said in a media release yesterday.
Piggott said that like many other Caribbean activists still fighting “homophobia and the existing archaic laws” she would love the region to reach the stage of marriage equality but it was not there. (AC)
