AFTER ONE of our most prolific soca seasons, where we thought we couldn’t surpass last year’s record of great soca hits, we toil again with little or no soca music being played on our radio stations.
This season of music attracted patrons in their numbers and had rave reviews for melodies and the diversity of party favourites being offered. But we cry shame on our for DJs ridiculing our local music industry.
Their attempts to play music from other countries seem to be both a lack of patriotism and a lack of faith in our soca artistes and the country’s music industry. Our artistes continue to spend thousands of dollars on their craft with no return on their investment and no hope of airplay beyond six weeks.
This parochial approach by our DJs is evident in reduced listenership, with advertisers opting to advertise on the Internet. As we approach our 50th anniversary we need to rise above our small island mentality and pay homage to our great stars and our products.
