Sandiford wins lone medal in CAC chess

LEIGH SANDIFORD won Barbados’ only medal at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Youth Chess Festival on a day of heartbreak for the island’s two other medal hopefuls in Trinidad yesterday.

Sandiford completed his eighth victory in nine matches in the Under-10 division to finish level on points with Jamaican David Thomas and Colombian Ramirez Lopez, but had to settle for the silver medal on the tiebreaker, which gave the top spot to Thomas.

In the process, Sandiford, champion in the Under-10 section at last week’s Caribbean Chess Carnival, became the youngest Barbadian ever to be awarded the title of candidate master.
