REACHING FOR POPULAR cold and allergy medicine may become harder as pharmacists move to restrict their sale.
The Barbados Pharmaceutical Society is concerned about the misuse of certain over-the-counter preparations charging in one case a man ended up in the Psychiatric Hospital and another died as a result of a stroke brought on by such abuse.
President of the society Bandele Serrano said that the pharmacists’ body, through the Barbados Pharmacy Council, had been making representation to the Ministry of Health in an effort to control the easy access to cough syrups, antihistamines and branded drugs as concern mounted about addiction and harmful self-medication.
“We are aware that some people may be abusing certain preparation and, yes, the council and society have been making efforts to get them to use the medications correctly,” he said.
