SHANE BRATHWAITE kept his cool to advance to the semi-finals of the men’s 110 metres hurdles at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China, yesterday.

Barbadian Brathwaite, fresh from a bronze medal at last month’s Pan Am Games, won his heat in 13.28 seconds with Jamaica’s Omar McLeod second in 13.43 seconds. However, the news was not so good for Trinidad and Tobago’s Mikel Thomas. The Pan American silver medallist fell after the first hurdle but picked himself up to finish the race. However, he was subsequently disqualified. There was also drama at the start of the race when Germany’s Alexander John was disqualified after jumping the gun.

Also advancing to the semi-finals was another local athlete, Greggmar Swift, who finished fourth in his heat in 13.41 seconds. Jamaica’s Hansel Parchment won that fourth heat in 13.33 seconds.
