White battles through to quarters

THE FANS spent a lot of time staring at the heavens on Sunday night when the Barbados Public Workers’ Co-operative Credit Union Limited’s Monarchs Of The Court road tennis tournament continued at the Flow Sports Club, Wildey.

While those fans would have been looking at the “blood moon”, No. 2 seed Julian “Michael Jackson” White might have been looking up to the heavens seeking divine help to escape an embarrassing upset at the hands of No. 15 ranked player Lloyd “Dick Man” Burke.

In nearly two decades of competition, Burke can count just one win over White which was a one-game shotgun in 2002.

Well, someone did answer White’s prayers as he survived from 3-10 in the decisive set to advance to the quarter-finals 21-11, 20-22, 21-18. White, who had lost last year’s finals to Antonio “Lil Man” Daniel, had looked a sure goner as he struggled with his attack, while a focused Burke played the superior game.
