BARBADIANS ARE BEING encouraged to focus on healthy eating whether or not they have diabetes.
This morning at the Diabetes Association of Barbados’ Jessamine Cot, Beckles Road, St Michael headquarters, president Noreen Merritt spoke of a worldwide increase of type two diabetes which is preventable with proper eating habits.
“Healthy eating should not only be for persons with diabetes or chronic illness. Our focus although we are the Barbados diabetes association is to try to get them to eat healthier and to be active,” she said during a Press briefing
Entertainment companies Xhosa Barbados and La Frere International made donations to the association which is celebrating its 40th anniversary.
Marketing director of La Frere Anton Nicholls explained why.
“As young people growing up in the community we wanted to reach out and give back with a telling contribution to society and not just be a corporation that’s just for profits,” he remarked.
Band leader of Xhosa Jeremy Nicholls said that his Crop Over band decided to dedicate a section towards charity through community spirit.
He said that upon hearing younger people were being affected by the chronic illness and being more aware of the challenges, he wanted to assist. (MR)
