UWI clock tower damaged

TRAFFIC IS BEING REDIRECTED from using the roundabout near the clock at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill (UWI) because the tower in which it rests  is showing signs of damage.

“What we’ve done as a precautionary measure is to cordon off the area so that  in the event that something else came down, nobody would get injured,” said communications officer at the Cave Hill campus, Chelston Lovell.

“It’s not a construction site; you can’t give people a hard hat. You have tell them something has happened and we want to ensure the structural integrity of [the tower]; it’s a maintenance issue,” he added.

Since the area had been cordoned off with yellow caution tape, the student body was prohibited from travelling through the lobby.

Some students have expressed confusion about the situation. One of them, Rachael Worrell, said she was not updated on the matter.

“They just said in the email telling the students that the building which holds the clock tower is under investigation and for that reason no vehicles are to pass there . . . . It would be better if they would disclose what was happening so you wouldn’t be in the dark,” she added.

Worrell said she understood it was a safety issue but the disruption has been an inconvenience.

Another student, Renee Odle, agreed.

“Yes, I do understand that it is for my safety but I think they can be hastier in fixing it . . . . The lobby is the quickest path to everything and we have to walk around; it’s annoying and time consuming.” (TSG)
