TWENTY-FOUR temporary employees are being hired immediately at the National Insurance Department to deal with the massive backlog of claims.

This has been revealed by Minister of Labour Senator Dr Esther Byer-Suckoo, who told the WEEKEND NATION Wednesday there were not 20 000 overdue claims as reported but in the region of 13 000 and the NIS was implementing several plans to help clear the backlog.

“There are a number of things that we will be trying, including bringing on extra people to help clear the backlog. That is one of the things that we are looking to do almost immediately,” she stressed, adding that in the first instance they would hire about two dozen people.

“Those are not permanent staff, just persons coming in just to help us clear the backlog, especially with sickness claims,” she said. (MB)
