Why put me to the test? Bring me a coin and let me look at it. And he said to them, “whose likeness and inscription is it?” They said to him, “Caesar’s.” Jesus said to them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.” – (Mark 12: verse 16 and 17).
WHEN I SAW the main headline of the Monday, November 16 edition of the DAILY NATION which read Stress Code followed by the secondary head which read: “Some teachers unhappy with protocol for the Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave visits”, I came to the conclusion that there are some people who will find excuses for everything on earth if they are prepared to do or support it.
Stress what? I feel that there are too many people who are hiding behind or under such a word as “stress”. I also think that it is an overworked word these days. If there is something that is really called stress, it is caused by the individuals themselves.
Teachers and especially the children should be glad that they can interact with our Governor General, Sir Elliott, for it is an opportunity of a lifetime.
Those teachers who do not approve of such visits should be ashamed of themselves and must remember that they are in charge of young minds and should be careful about the signal they are sending to those young children and the public as a whole.
If they have a problem with protocol, then they should be prepared to leave the teaching profession.
I am sure that if the Governor General were from England, the teachers would have them lining the streets just to get a little look – only to see a little wave!
We must remember to render to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s. One just cannot meet the Head of State in an inappropriate manner.
It was also reported that a male teacher was asked to leave the school hall after he was deemed to be inappropriately dressed. Whoever the principal was, he or she must be congratulated for such firm action. You are right and you must keep it up.
Those of us who are leaders have to be firm especially when many of the standards around us are falling. Everyone who comes in contact with the Head of State in whatever form must obey the protocol in whatever form it comes.
