BARBADOS’ SENIOR WOMEN’S HOCKEY TEAM romped into the final of the Aquece Rio International Hockey Championship in Brazil with a classy 3-1 victory over a stubborn and persistent Paraguay team, yesterday.
It was Barbados’ third straight victory of the championship and first ever victory over Paraguay after drawing all their previous encounters.
The win gives Barbados the maximum nine points from their round-robin matches, securing their place in today’s gold medal match against Peru scheduled for 11 a.m.
Playing the first game of the day at the Olympic Hockey Centre in Deodoro Olympic Park, Rio de Janeiro, the Bajan girls, fresh from wins against hosts Brazil and Peru, started relatively flat against a sturdy Paraguayan squad in the punishing Brazilian mid-morning heat. (PR/EZS)
