Quiet start to Dancefest

THE FIRST NIGHT of the 2015 Community Dancefest Zone Finals got off to a quiet start in the hall of Christ Church Foundation School on Thursday night, featuring talented youth from the southern zone.

Wreckage Dancers were first up with their piece “United to End Violence Against Women”. It not only depicted a tumultuous relationship between an abusive man and his partner, but the chaos which ensues after abuse in all its dark forms.

The Phoenix Dancers (below) lightened the mood with “Straight from the Streets”. Decked from head to toe in black, they demonstrated that not all boys “from the streets” were involved in violent activity.

Following their passionate performance was the third group of the night, the three-man team of Inside Out, who went on a trip with their routine “Back to the Future”. With a sampling of music tracks from yesteryear to today, the youths displayed acrobatic skill across the stage, perfectly complementing each other’s choreographed actions.

Closing the show were the fleet footed dancers of the Livy and Betty Alleyne Dance Centre, who with their Latin Fusion piece, commanded the full stage and incorporated elements from waltz, cha-cha and samba into their routine.

The Community Dancefest 2015 Zone Finals continue tonight at the Foundation School, featuring competitors from St Michael South. (SM)
