Sales hike

BARBADIANS ARE SPENDING big bucks for Christmas and merchants in Bridgetown are over the moon.

After five years of depressed sales and job cuts in the retail sector, business operators said yesterday that Barbadians appeared to be spending much more for the holidays. This was confirmed by Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) president Tracey Shuffler.

Eddy Abed, managing director of Abeds & Co Ltd, said he was pleasantly surprised at the way Barbadians had been shopping thus far.

He told the DAILY NATION: “We felt that with the economy still extremely sluggish and [high] unemployment being a factor, disposable income wouldn’t be as large as we’ve seen in years gone by, but we’re pleasantly surprised at the response.” (TSG)
