Farmers: Drought drying up harvest

THE SUGAR CROP for 2016 is looking grim.

Farmers have planted more cane than last year but because of the drought they may not be able to reap them – green or ripe.

This was one of the dilemmas raised by independent sugar farmers yesterday when the Barbados Sugar Industries Limited held its annual general meeting at the Hilton Barbados.

Chairman Patrick Bethell, who was voted in for another term, told the WEEKEND NATION that this year’s drought, which he labelled as one of the worst on record, resulted in the crop starting and finishing late. Now, he said he does not believe that at this late stage the industry can resume its normal harvest operations in January.  (MB)
