No strap!

THE USE of corporal punishment in Bajan homes and schools probably does more harm than good and should end.

That’s according to Canada’s top black Anglican cleric, the Rt Rev. Peter Fenty, a Bajan who worries that corporal punishment in Barbados may unwittingly be putting a stamp of approval on acts of violence in the minds of young people.

“I am opposed to capital punishment and I am opposed to corporal punishment,” said the cleric, who was elected two years ago as Canada’s first black Anglican bishop. “Growing up in Barbados I was subjected to corporal punishment.

“Any striking of another person is an act of violence, no matter how we want to name it. If you hit another person that is an act of violence. I am not convinced that the history of it and what we have seen over the years with corporal punishment have achieved what we want to believe or think it does. (TB)
