Firm but fair, says new judge

BARBADOS’ newest High Court judge is promising to be “firm but fair and treat everybody equally”.

Former Chief Magistrate Pamela Beckles made the pledge minutes after taking the oath of office before Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave at Government House yesterday.

She told the media she would continue in the same vein as she did in the magistrates’ court.

The new judge said she considered it an honour to be elevated to the position and was looking forward to working at the Supreme Court Complex with her colleagues and “facing the many challenges there”.

For family friend Astor B Watts, it was “a memorable occasion” in his 93-year lifespan to see the young legal aspirant he had always admired, reach “that particular height”. He joined several members of the family who were at Government House to support her.
