WITH A SPONGE in his left hand, a bucket of water in the right and a broad smile on his face, Eden Scantlebury boasts of being a proud man – happy to be alive, to be healthy and mainly to be able to turn up every day to a job that he truly enjoys.
For almost 40 years the native of Locust Hall, St George has plied his skills in various car parks as an “automotive detail and appearance technician” or what most Bajans refer to as a car washer.
The 52-year-old didn’t have to read many years for a degree in the field but that doesn’t stop him from feeling a sense of accomplishment when a long day is done. Actually, during an interview with the DAILY NATION while he took a quick break from his duties, Scantlebury proclaimed there is nothing else he would prefer to do.
Scantlebury presently operates from the BTI car park in Bay Street but when he began many years ago it was as an absentee pupil of the St Leonard’s Boys’ School.
He recounted that many days he would skip going to school and instead head for Bridgetown to the former Empire cinema to watch kung-fu movies and it was while hanging in town that he developed a fancy for the job. (SDB Media)
