Fat tax fuss

A UNIVERSITY health sciences lecturer has called for a special tax to be imposed on Barbados’ increasingly fat and grossly overweight people.

But the controversial call has been rejected out of hand by some in the medical field. The owner of one of the island’s leading gyms called the proposal ludicrous, while the organiser of the popular Big & Beautiful Show blasted the idea, saying fat people should not be targeted for such treatment.

It was during the Ministry of Health’s town hall meeting on the future of health care financing at Queen’s College on Tuesday night that post graduate lecturer in health sciences, Dr Lennox Sealy, put the proposal on the table.
